In this series, so far, we have discussed three foundation principles or considerations that will guide the actions of the Dominica Freedom Party as we seek to move beyond just talking. The first consideration relates to the pursuit of the big idea (making Dominica the nature island of the world) and we noted that in that regard that access to land will be a major determinant of the people's prosperity. The second consideration relates to the fundamental question that must be kept in mind when contemplating pursuing an idea - what are the critical problems that may prevent the venture from achieving success? The third consideration is that there must be investments by the people and we noted that there are significant challenges to be overcome in that regard.
In this and the next article we pause to share with you our answers to some questions we received about our response to the July 28th 2020/21 budget address by the Prime Minister of Dominica.
Question 1: The DFP released its response to the budget. It highlighted that there was a lack of reporting on sustainable development outcomes. Could you explain this observation? On July 28th 2020, the Prime minister of the Commonwealth of Dominica gave the customary address in parliament in relation to the national budget. He presented the budget for fiscal year commencing July 2020 and ending June 2021 (FY20/21), under the theme – the road to dynamic Dominica; fostering economic resilience.
The Dominica Freedom Party (DFP) congratulates the majority of the Dominicans who reside in Dominica for rejecting Roosevelt Skerrit – who has headed an evil, vicious, vile and repugnant political gang that has been presiding over our country which they are plunging into a state of lawlessness, despair, poverty and lack.
The will of the people who reside in Dominica has been negated during the December 6th 2019 general elections by the effort of the Skerrit-led political gang at stealing the elections. These efforts were massive and resulted in the Dominica Labour Party capturing 18 seats of the 21 seats. The Dominica Labour Party “captured” the seat, but they did not lawfully “win” many of the seats. Consequently, the Dominica Freedom Party does not recognize these general elections results as being legitimate. In the last of our first three statements on the new Corona virus in Dominica, we started discussing the desirability for there to be prepared a meaningful rapid relief package and an economic stimulus package to respectively address the immediate social impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the people and awaken the economy. With regards to a stimulus package, our suggestion is not per se about a package towards resuscitating the economy in the aftermath of the adverse impact of the COVID-19 pandemic as, the truth be told, there is not much to resuscitate. But certainly, the occasion of the COVID-19 pandemic provides a compelling action point to reset the economy, as the little life that was remaining in the economy of Dominica is being snuffed out by the COVID – 19 pandemic and there are potentially new trends, realities and opportunities that need to be incorporated into our economic planning. In our last statement we discussed the need for a rapid relief package, and discussed considerations for resetting the agriculture industry. We now turn our attention to the tourism industry.
7/6/2020 Statement number 3 by the Dominica Freedom Party on the New Corona Virus in Dominica May 11th 2020The Dominica Freedom Party congratulate you the people of Dominica for your adherence to the social distancing recommendations and for your respect of the curfew and lockdown as our country seeks to minimize risk to life from the COVID-19 pandemic. We are thankful that no lives have been lost of the 16 persons officially reported to behave been infected with the new corona virus, most of whom have recovered. We urge our continue vigilance and pragmatism as the quasi-lock down and curfew is gradually eased.
But an economic disaster is certainly looming in our land – the result of a double whammy – loss of CBI revenue and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic! A significant worsening in social conditions will result and the already-low quality of life in the nation will drop. A key challenge will be how to prevent the situation from becoming chaotic and how do we ultimately restore the economic health of our country. 6/12/2020 Statement Number 2 by the Dominica Freedom Party on the New Corona Virus in Dominica April 14th 2020The Dominica Freedom Party (DFP) continues to encourage all citizens and residents of Dominica to adhere to the current advice of our public servants to practice social distancing, wear a mask and to respect the curfew and lockdown measures that are aimed at halting the spread of COVID-19 – the disease caused by the New Corona Virus.
But we recognize that our country is on the verge of a total economic disaster – the results of a double whammy – loss of CBI revenue and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic! While we must hope for the best as it relates to COVID-19, as a people we must prepare for the worst. A key challenge will be how to prevent the situation from becoming chaotic and how do we ultimately restore the economic health of our country. We shall address that in our next statement, but we pause to explain a bit on how the economy is going to be adversely affected, how the government finances will weaken significantly, and the difficulty that the government will experience in its effort to raise financing. |
